Not all failed repairs look like a wreck.

Melanie Bourke's St Albans rental property is a tidy brick unit, set back from the road with a well-kept garden and a fresh coat of paint.

Bourke and her husband, Roger, bought the house, fully insured, in February 2016.

They did what they considered the normal due diligence, checking documentation to make sure it had been repaired and signed off after suffering damage in the February 2011 earthquake.
