A deadline on the upcoming seventh anniversary of the 2010 Christchurch earthquake has forced some residents with outstanding insurance claims to go to court to keep their cases alive.
From September 4, under the Limitations Act, insurance companies could challenge homeowners over the length of time it has taken to bring their claims to court.
Lawyer Peter Woods says this means the homeowners lose the option to claim in court.
"And if they're made an offer and they don't accept it, what option have they got?" he said.
