Major earthquake could isolate Coast communities for two weeks, geologist warns

West Coast communities should be prepared to fend for themselves for a fortnight when the Alpine Fault ruptures, according to a leading geologist.

Otago University associate professor Caroline Orchiston has told the West Coast Regional Council audit and risk committee there is a 75 per cent chance of a magnitude 8 earthquake on the central section of the fault in the next 50 years.
